Childhood Asthma and Milk Allergy

Initial presentation for this 1 year old child was for ear infections and chronic upper respiratory infections. He was treated appropriately using chiropractic and nutritional protocols. He responded favorably but continued to have residual symptoms. He was then tested for food sensitivities using the ELISA IgG techniques. The labs indicated hypersensitivity to milk and dairy products. They were removed from his diet and he did very well. At age 3 the child developed asthma. It was learned that he craved and was drinking up to a gallon of milk per week. The lesson to be learned here is that frequently, people crave the very foods to which they are allergic. Further information may be found at Rx Alternative Medicine.

Metabolic Syndrome in Teenagers

Metabolic Syndrome is a pre-diabetes condition characterized by abdominal obesity, abnormal cholesterol and blood sugar and insulin problems. Historically, it has been a condition usually seen in older adults who have managed to ruin their health throughout the course of a lifetime. Now, we are seeing teenagers with metabolic syndrome. It is a result of the obesity epidemic among children compounded by lack of exercise, overconsumption of soft drinks and very poor nutrition. The problem is so common now that vitamin companies such as Metagenics have developed supplements and dietary protocols for children with metabolic syndrome.

Heavy Metal Intoxication

A 47 y.o. female presented with a diagnosis of hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP). HSP is characterized by severe, progressive lower extremity spasticity and extreme weakness. The patient had a history of being bed confined for weeks. There are no known treaments to prevent, slow, or reverse HSP. The patient had worked in a confined welding environment in 1997-98. Subsequently, she developed vertigo, nausea, panic attacks, difficulty breathing, palpitations of the heart, headache, depression and weight loss. She saw numerous doctors with no real answers until the HSP diagnosis a couple years after the onset of symptoms. Upon learning of the welding experience, a hair toxic metals analysis was ordered. The results were high in a number of toxic metals but most interesting was an extreme elevation in manganese. Manganese is concentrated in the welding environment. Confirmation was performed by urine toxic metals. The patient was placed on appropriate nutritional protocols for heavy metal detoxication. She was also given a series of chiropractic treatments. Her response was dramatic and she has reported very good progressive improvement in the ensuing weeks.

Lower Cholesterol Naturally

A female patient in her 30's presented with the following cholesterol levels; Cholesterol 241, Triglycerides 94, HDL 65, LDL 127. Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes or TLC are now recommended in lieu of drugs for low to moderately elevated blood lipids. TLC incorporates dietary, supplement and exercise changes. In this case the patient did the life style changes and took the Cardiogenics, Vessel Care, Cholarest and CoEnzyme Q10 from the Metagenics company. She was delighted to report her readings had dropped to cholesterol 197, triglycerides 99, HDL 78 and LDL 100. It is important for our readers to understand that statin drugs are not always necessary and doctors should be questioned as to viable alternatives.

Adrenal Insufficiency

A 47 year old female presented with chronic sinus problems, allergies, extreme fatigue, chronic recurring upper respiratory infections and a history of thyroid cancer. Comprehensive Health Assessment strongly suggested adrenal involvement with a high score on the adrenal axis and hypoglycemia sections. Four-sample salivary cortisol and DHEA was ordered to be performed by Genova Diagnostics lab. Results confirmed extremely low cortisol especially in the 7AM-9AM sample. The patient was placed on appropriate nutritional supplements and diet and experienced immediate significant improvement.

Stress and Severe Fatigue

A pleasant lady in her 30's presented with severe fatigue and feeling sleepy all the time. Comprehensive health assessment in this case did NOT confirm the suspected chronic fatigue, adrenal insufficiency, allergy and other considerations. Since the Comprehensive Assessment did not fit the picture it led to further questioning of the patient resulting in the conclusion that the symptoms were side effects of antidepressant medication. Replacing the medication gave instant improvement in the symptoms.

The child presented with chronic eczema, reflux and esophagitis since birth. He had known food sensitivities of peanuts, dairy, soy and eggs. He had history of mucus and bloody stool. Assessment was strongly indicative of food allergy and intestinal malabsorption. Blood testing for delayed food allergy was positive for a number of foods suggesting leaky gut. He was treated utilizing chiropractic manipulation and nutritional intervention including removal of offending foods, dairy free acidophilus and homeopathic remedy for yeast overgrowth. Response was good and within a week he was showing good improvement.

Slow Speech Development in a Child

A three year old child was referred by his speech therapist for a consultation. He was a very sharp little boy with intelligent, well-rounded parents. His assessment was all negative except for the possibility of some allergies. He was given a regimen of omega 3 fatty acids, the EPA/DHA product from Metagenics and also homeopathic and herbal remedies for allergy. For a nutrition supplement he was given UltraCare for Kids from Metagenics. One month later the mother called very happy and excited stating the boy was doing much better and had grown 3/4 inch in slightly over one month. For the reader's information, Metagenics products are not sold over the counter. They are only available through chiropractors or other professionals who specialize in nutrition. Their products are available through our clinic web site. You must first log in and then click on the 'Online Store' on the left panel.

Parasites

A 37 year old male presented with multiple complaints including severe fatigue, muscle weakness and wasting, an unusual skin rash, inability to tolerate heat or noise, poor concentration and craving for sweets. He had been to several doctors and had been told he may have Lyme's disease, toxic metals, thyroid problems and food allergies. All of the therapies offered by the various doctors did him little good. We had the patient complete the Comprehensive Health Assessment. He scored high in many categories but particularly noteworthy were high scores in the gastrointestinal and yeast sections of the assessment. Laboratory testing was performed including Comprehensive Digestive and Stool Analysis and Candida albicans (yeast) antibody testing. Results of the tests were very gratifying because they not only confirmed our suspicions, they disclosed the presence of four types of microbial parasitic presence in the intestine, including Giardia, and also yeast overgrowth. Treatment was initiated using natural protocols. Once again, the Comprehensive Health Assessment has performed flawlessly as an adjunctive tool for the practicing physician.

Stress, Adrenal Fatigue

A female patient was not responding to chiropractic therapy in that her treatments would not last. The doctor was suspicious of adrenal gland fatigue and ordered an online Comprehensive Health Assessment. Results of the assessment confirmed the doctor's suspicions and that, combined with clinical assessment, led to prescription of lifestyle changes and supplement protocols to support the adrenal glands. Information on adrenal fatigue may be found at Rx Alternative Medicine

Ulcerative Colitis

A 49 year old developed ulcerative colitis after having surgery, radiation and chemotherapy for breast cancer. It was necessary for her to continue on Prednisone to control bowel symptoms and diarrhea. The assessment included online Comprehensive Health Assessment and she scored high in nearly all categories. Appropriate therapeutic and dietary protocols were initiated including a bland diet, alkaline diet, avoiding dairy products, increased consumption of fruits and vegetables. She avoided consumption of hydrogenated oils and animal fats. In addition, she was given hydrochloric acid, pancreatic enzyme, EPA/DHA and glyconutritional supplements. In one month's time, the patient was significantly better in all areas of complaint and symptoms and she had discontinued the use of Prednisone.

Crohn's Disease

A 25 y.o. female presented with a diagnosis of Crohn's disease. She was also experiencing reflux, and joint pain, and had a history of mono and hair loss. The steroid treatment for her Crohn's masked the other symptoms and she was unable to correlate them to the Crohn's. She had seasonal allergies which had been worse since she had removal of her spleen 3 years prior. She stated she had always had frequent yeast infections. She completed the online Comprehensive Health Assessment and results were high for candidiasis, adrenal gland insufficiency with associated hypoglycemia, food allergy, and female hormonal involvement. She was placed on alternative medicine protocols including dietary intervention and an immune support supplement called Ultra InflammX from the Metagenics company. She showed immediate improvement and continues on her road to health. Under times of extreme stress her symptoms can return but overall, she continues to show positive results.

ADD ADHD Treatment Without Ritalin

Warnings about use of Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta and Metadate in the treatment of ADD and ADHD were published by the FDA this week. Please visit Rx Alternative Medicine for details. It is fitting to share with our readers a couple cases where ADD and ADHD were treated successfully without the use of dangerous drugs. In both these cases, the young boys were extremely hyperactive, even to the point of needing to be restrained during the consultation with the doctor. The first case included a history of a severe trauma to the nose and face in a fall wherein the child landed on his face on the edge of a step. Examination disclosed a cranial bone dysfunction and he was treated with cranial and chiropractic spinal manipulation. The results were dramatic and stopped his ADHD. In the second case, the child responded very well to an herbal remedy which successfully enabled the parents to avoid the use of drugs. These two cases are typical of response parents see when they turn away from drugs and to safer, natural alternatives. Sometimes, Ritalin is necessary to control extreme cases but frequently, safer options work just as well. A detailed discussion on natural alternatives for ADD and ADHD may be found at Rx Alternative Medicine.

Ear Infections 20 Month Old Child

This beautiful 20 month old child was brought by her parents who were very concerned about her chronic, unrelenting ear infections. They feared her next procedure would be tubes in her ears which they wanted to avoid, if possible. The child had been on continuous antibiotics for 5 months to no avail. She was also on three different asthma medications. History and symptoms were suggestive of food allergy and intestinal yeast overgrowth. Examination disclosed many of the classic signs of food allergy and yeast overgrowth including the dark circles under the eyes. Chiropractic examination disclosed a spinal misalignment complex in the upper neck region. She was treated with chiropractic spinal manipulation and placed on a low yeast, low sugar, dairy free nutrition program. She was given dairy free acidophilus supplementation from the Metagenics company and a product called Otoplex from Europe which is a combination of homeopathic formula and echinacea. The response was immediate and dramatic. She was able to get off all medications and one year later her mother reported that the year had been fabulous. COMMENT. It is our clinical experience that if the doctors would simply take children with ear infections off all dairy products that the success rate would be astonishing and the tubes in the ears procedure would become obsolete. Fibromyalgia and Intestinal Yeast Overgrowth

A very nice 50 year old lady presented with multiple fibromyalgia symptoms, chronic fatigue, swelling of lymph glands, tunnel vision, headache, chronic sinus conjestion, rectal bleeding, irritable bowel, undigested food in the stool and a medical diagnosis of Meniere's disease. She would experience "dumping syndrome" wherein a meal would pass completely through her within 30 minutes after eating. Her problems started with an infection subsequent to a surgical mistake. The history and symptoms questionnaire was strongly suggestive of yeast overgrowth, candidiasis. Comprehensive Digestive and Stool Analysis was ordered through the Great Smokies Lab. Results of the lab test confirmed exactly the assessment from the comprehensive health questionnaire. The patient responded very well to appropriate therapy and is doing much better. A Unique Case of Hypothyroid

A lady in her 50's developed gradual onset chronic pain in the neck, back, hands and generalized stiffness in the joints. During the fall season she developed adult onset asthma. Her case baffled all her doctors including a rheumatologist and this author. She had been taking prescription synthetic thyroxine mediciation for a number of years following abaltion of the thyroid for a tumor. Upon seeing success with another hypothyroid patient who was suffering from fibromyalgia, it was suggested that she switch the prescription to Armour Thyroid. She did so, and the symptoms completely cleared. Armour Thyroid is a whole gland product which naturally contains all the thyroid hormones and glandular components thus presenting the body with a spectrum of natural medication not available in thyroxine specific drugs.

Lifetime of Hives 4 Year Old

A precious 4 year old suffered from hives literally from birth. She had a very difficult delivery and showed stress upon birth. She had experienced hives especially upon contact with certain foods such as peanuts. She had had only limited testing for allergies performed by various physicians. History and symptoms were strongly suggestive of delayed as well as immediate food allergies and probable adrenal stress/insufficiency. IgG tests for delayed food allergies were positive for all gluten containing foods. Upon removal of gluten from her diet combined with use of the Metagenics product UltraMeal for Kids, she showed immediate improvement. Further information on food allergies may be found at RxAlternativeMedicine
